저는 목표를 위해 꾸준하게 노력하는 성격을 지녔습니다. 게다가 주변 사람들과 잘 어울리는 외향적인 성격입니다. 덕분에 원만한 팀워크를 요구하는 팀 프로젝트 및 대외 활동에서 늘 좋은 결과를 이끌어낼 수 있었습니다. 한 예로, 녹색성장을 이해하고 탐구하는 대외활동 `그린칼리지`에 참여했을 때에 저의 성격은 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 그린칼리지 프로젝트는 사회 제반 시스템이 열악한 국가에 도움이 될 수 있는 적정 기술을 제안하는 것이었습니다. 다른 학과 3명과 한 팀이 되어 개발도상국의 거주 환경을 개선할 수 있는 신재생에너지를 기반으로 한 전력 시스템 구축을 위한 아이디어를 모색했습니다.
하지만 일반적인 신재생에너지 시스템은 자연 변화에 취약하여서 큰 어려움이 있었습니다. 이를 해결하기 위해 조원들과 머리를 맞대고 밤낮으로 고민한 끝에 얻은 해결방안은 바로 ‘역발상’에 의한 것이었습니다. 자연의 변화를 역이용하여 새로운 전력 공급 방법으로 만들어보기로 한 것입니다. 저희 팀은 온도의 변화에 따른 기체 용해도의 변화를 이용하여 물을 끌어올려 매일 온도가 순환될 때마다 위치에너지를 지속적으로 생산해내는 모델을 만들었습니다. 심사위원들에게 아이디어의 창의성을 인정받아 대상을 수상하였습니다.
이 수상은 6개월 동안의 장기 레이스에서 저를 포함한 4명의 팀원이 개인의 열정을 모아 팀원 간의 시너지로 이끌어낸 소중한 경험이었습니다. 처음 프로젝트를 시작할 때의 의욕이 여러 가지 개념 오류에 부딪혀 좌절될 때에도, 서로를 응원하며 단 한 명도 끝까지 포기하지 않았기에 창의적인 아이디어를 발견해내어 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있었습니다.
저는 씀씀이가 좋지 않습니다. 학부 때부터 가격 대비 성능이 좋은 물건을 발견했을 때, 언젠가는 분명 쓰임이 있을 것이라는 생각에 저렴한 상품이 보이면 무엇이든지 구매해놓는 습관이 있습니다. 미국에서 석사과정을 보낼 때는, 한국으로 돌아오는 제 캐리어 안에는 아무도 부탁하지 않은 수많은 전자기기와 화장품이 한가득 담겨있기도 했습니다. 여전히 제 방 안에는 가격표도 떼지 않은 옷과 신발들이 가득합니다.
또한, 가끔 구매 후 변심하여 손이 잘 가지 않는 전자기기나 옷을 구매가보다 조금 더 웃돈을 받고 재판매하기도 합니다. 최근에는 구매 빈도를 많이 줄이긴 했지만, 여전히 인터넷에서 여러 상품을 찾아보고 원하는 상품의 최저가를 알아보는 것은 제 소소한 취미 생활입니다. 이런 제 성격은 생활비가 많이 지출된다는 단점은 있지만 유용한 물건을 찾아 이를 가치 창출해 내는 안목은 상사맨으로서 매우 도움이 될 요소라고 생각합니다.
I am a person with ceaseless passion to achieve my goals. Moreover, I am an outgoing person who can positively interact with anyone. I could win several awards in team projects and extracurricular activities based on my strength. One of the example is when I’ve participated in Green College. Green College program was organized by the government sector Green Growth to inspire the young generation to learn and adopt sustainable growth in real world problems. The goal of the final project in Green College was to come up with a technology that could help people from developing countries. Since my undergraduate major was in energy resources engineering, I proposed to my teammates to consider an idea that can be inspired from renewable energy system.
However, our team faced a challenge whenever we came up with ideas, it is the fact that the Mother Nature is in constant change. We almost gave up the idea after several failures, then we decided to approach this problem from a different perspective. Rather than finding ways to come up with ideas and solve the problems, we decided to utilize the Mother Nature’s constant changes. From the fact that the solubility of gas changes as temperature changes, we designed and built a model that utilizes daily temperature to generate potential energy.
Our model was considered creative and our team was awarded with the grand prize. I believe the harmony of creative thinking, team work, and unremitting efforts was the key factors that led to a success in this project.
On the other side, I sometimes spend money recklessly. From my undergraduate years, whenever I find something with high performance per price, I bought it with the belief that it would be useful sometime, somehow. When I was in US for my master’s, I came back to Korea with the suitcases that are full of electronics and cosmetics that nobody has asked for. There are still some shoes and clothes with price tag on in my room.
Also, I sometimes sell the electronics and clothes that I’ve decided not to use with premium. Lately, even it has been less frequent but still it is one of my hobby to look for various products and find their lowest prices. I agree that it is a small drawback as it necessitates high living costs but I expect that these characteristics would help me building a critical requisites of becoming an trader.
