Mission and Vision: IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society.
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. With 166 member states, a further 8 states are holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries are endeavoring to promote humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all.
IOM dedication to the vision “humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all”, is being put into play by providing services and advice to governments and migrants. IOM advances to help ensure: orderly and humane management of migration, promoting international cooperation on migration issues, assisting in the search for practical solutions to migration problems, and providing humanitarian assistance to migrants in need (refugees and internally displaced people).
The IOM Constitution recognizes the link between migration, economic, social, and cultural development as well as the right to freedom of movement. Therefore, IOM pushes heavily in the four broad areas of the migration management:
? Migration and development
? Facilitating migration
? Regulating migration
? Forced migration.
IOM has widely recognized cross-cutting activities including the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of migrants' rights, migration health, and the gender dimension of migration. As "The UN Migration Agency" IOM has become the point of reference in the heated global debate on the social, economic and political implications of migration in the 21st century.
